All writers, both established and upcoming, can submit script ideas for the sixth Teksmark.
Teksmark is a project of the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival (KKNK), supported by the Nasionale Afrikaanse Teaterinisiatief (NATi) and the Baxter Theatre Centre, and will be presented again in Cape Town from 16 to 19 November 2021.
Ten scripts from this project, which received a special Fleur du Cap Theatre Award for Innovation in 2018, have already been developed to fully-fledged productions. Playwrights and scripts from previous Teksmark years have also received numerous nominations and awards. One of the scripts was published recently.
The aim of this project is to develop new South African drama scripts while offering playwrights the opportunity to pitch their script ideas to interested parties in the theatre industry for possible further development. All writers, whether emerging or established, are invited to take part.
An independent panel selects a number of scripts from the proposals received, and these are presented as play readings at Teksmark. Here, playwrights have the opportunity to discuss their ideas and scripts with representatives from theatres, festivals, producers and other possible investors. Short excerpts from these proposals are presented as play readings with professional producers and actors. The market is open for any interested parties to negotiate with playwrights for possible investment and/or further development of their scripts.
Teksmark is only open to South African residents. Script ideas in all genres will be accepted, but comedy and satirical scripts are encouraged. Proposals in any official South African language are considered, with multilingual proposals encouraged. Only scripts that have never before been performed professionally, are considered. Visit the KKNK website at www.kknk.co.za/teksmark to submit your proposal. A complete list of guidelines for proposals is also available here. The closing date for proposals is Monday, 27 September 2021 and no late entries will be considered.
