An exciting new children’s theatre production, Parsley and Rosemary tell storiesI!, is on show at the Suidoosterfees this year – an excellent opportunity for parents to keep their children entertained during the school holidays. The show is a co-production of the Suidoosterfees and the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival (KKNK), and is supported by the National Afrikaans Theatre Initiative (NATi).
“The importance of stories, reading and theatre, especially for children, can never be over-emphasised and that is why we decided to join forces with the Suidoosterfees and develop Parsley and Rosemary tell stories! says Hugo Theart, Artistic Director of the KKNK.Parsley and Rosemary Tell Stories! was developed from two children’s books: Princess Pumpkin Seed by Bianca Flanders and Rafiek Mammon’s Faizel and the stars.
Parsley and Rosemary Tell Stories! tells the story of two characters who travel the world with their little magic caravan, seeking friendships, books and children to share stories with. The message is educational and focuses on the importance of tolerance, appreciating the fact that everyone is unique, to be yourself and of course, the value of reading.
Dean Balie and Bianca Flanders star in the production, with puppets from Koos Marais joining the fun. Balie won several Fiësta Awards for his production The Poet, who is he? this year, as well as a kykNET Sinjatuur Award as Promising Newcomer. Flanders is a writer, actor, voice artist and teacher, and among other accolades, was nominated for a Fleur du Cap award in 2016 for her role as Miela in Crystal Plain.
Parsley and Rosemary Tell Stories! can be seen at Artscape in Cape Town from 26 to 28 April at 10:30 and 13:30, with strict Covid-19 protocols in place. The production will tour the Garden Route later this year, and also be presented in Oudtshoorn.
