More than 100 new script ideas were received for this year’s ninth Teksmark, from which 15 were selected for Teksmark at The Baxter Theatre Centre in Cape Town.

Here, script ideas of playwrights are presented as playreadings on Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 September in The Baxter Theatre’s Concert Hall to potential investors in the theatre industry. Teksmark is a KKNK project, in collaboration with NATi (Nasionale Afrikaanse Teater-inisiatief), the Baxter Theatre Centre, the ATKV and Het Jan Marais Nationale Fonds.

Script proposals were evaluated by an independent selection panel, after which 15 scripts were selected for Teksmark at The Baxter Theatre Centre.

The scripts and their writers are: Cucina e Devertiti by Ilne Fourie, Die repetisie by Rachelle Greeff, Ematyeni by Siphenathi Siqwayi, Familieportret by William Oosthuizen, Fiekie & Tasneem by Jean-Pierre Lesch, Gebakte salm en ’n waldorfslaai by Paula Fourie, Hamlet/Speenvark by Tinarie van Wyk Loots, Impoxo by Molupi Lepeli, Jasper se planeet by Wessel Pretorius, Meeting Murphy by Gavin Werner, Meire en Pinkie by Dianne du Toit Albertze, Stones by Ntsikayomzi Benya, The Salt Lesson by Sibuyiselo Dywili, Trienkie Swarts maak rooibos by Sylvia Vollenhoven & Basil Appollis and Volkome ... mens by Anton Treurnich.

The aim of Teksmark is to provide an opportunity to both established and emerging writers to present their ideas for new theatre scripts to possible investors in the theatre industry for possible further development.

Each playwright has an opportunity at Teksmark to discuss their script ideas and pitch it to potential investors. This is followed by an excerpt of ten minutes presented as a playreading before opening the floor for questions and further discussions of the script between the writer, performers and the audience.

A total of 42 performers are involved in the excerpts, including Dean Balie, Dustin Beck, Ludwig Binge, Ira Blanckenberg, Susanne Beyers, Emma Kotzé, Elton Landrew, Olga Leonard, Lindokuhle Melaphi, Nosiphiwo Ndabeni, Hunter Plaatjies, Waldemar Schultz, Jennifer Steyn, Daneel van der Walt, June van Merch, Chris van Niekerk, Ilse van Niekerk, Janelle Visagie, David Viviers and Gavin Werner.

Excerpts are directed by 15 directors, including Basil Appollis, Sibuyiselo Dywili, Albert Maritz, Euodia Samson, Wessel Pretorius, Darryl Spijkers, Hennie van Greunen and Tinarie van Wyk Loots.

Here representatives of festivals, theatres, producers and other investors can negotiate directly with playwrights for possible further development of the script.

Teksmark was presented for the first time in 2016. From the start, this project focused on providing an opportunity to playwrights to pitch their script ideas for possible support, with the aim to fully develop and finally stage the script as full-scale theatre production.

Over the past nine years 156 script ideas, in various official languages, have been presented at Teksmark. A total of 43 scripts have been developed into full-scale productions. Developed productions and scripts also boast several prestigious prizes over the years.

Almal is welkom om Teksmark by die Baxter-teatersentrum by te woon. Bywoning is gratis, maar dit is belangrik om vooraf op die KKNK se webblad te registreer. Om te registreer, klik hier.
